Nettle's Tale Fall Apparel

A few months ago, I drew a couple illustrations for some fall apparel items for Nettle's Tale Swimwear.  I did a decorative elk, done two ways for a crew neck sweater, and an ombre tank top, and some playful Orca whales for a baseball tee.  I had tons of fun working on these and its even cooler to see them on fabric! Big thanks to creator of Nettle's Tale, Julia Church for the gig :)

You can check out Nettle's Tale's website here: http://nettlestale.com/

European Adventuring

I'm back!  For those of you who don't follow me on Instagram or the Facebooks, and wondered about my mysterious disappearance, let me fill you in.  I spent the last 10 weeks living my dream of adventuring through Europe!  My best friend and I hit up five countries, and not gonna lie, I spent most of my money on food and I spent a fair amount of my time napping, but it was fantastic.  Europe was overflowing with an incredible amount of beauty, texture, and colour.  Safe to say, there was plenty of inspiration for me :)  I'm looking forward to some awesome projects this fall!  Here are some photo highlights of our trip:

That last picture doesn't lie.  I went to Downton Abbey.

Élémentaire Zine Interview: Dream Issue

Super stoked to be featured in Élémentaire Zine's Dreams Issue!  It's very convenient that I spend the fall working on illustrations with the theme of escaping the world through dreaming; as a result, my work fits in perfectly! Have a flip through the pages, there are some amazing artists being featured!   Big thanks to Mark Kiszely who hooked me up with this opportunity!

For The Birds

Wheww, it's been a couple weeks since I've posted anything, but I'm back in BLUE!  This most recent piece is for a group show at the Ayden Gallery in Vancouver.  The theme is The Colour Blue, and the show features a lot of amazing works by Emily Carr Illustration students.  I'm so happy to be a part of it!

Opening night is Tuesday April 1st, from 5:00-11:00.  If your in Vancouver come on down and say hellooo!  My bearded, half-asleep illustration man would be happy to get some attention other than from birds!

Swan lake - Process Post

Happy Wednesday! Here is my first process post, using my most recent illustration, Swan Lake, for those who have been waiting for one:)  I also experimented with making a GIF in Photoshop.  It was extremely confusing to learn how to do at first, but turned out to be pretty easy.  I will definitely be making more in the future!

Without further ado, here is how my process generally goes:

1. Sketch out a detailed thumbnail, and upload to Photoshop.  Please don't judge on how bad this looks haha, I really just need the general idea to get started. I'm also a believer that my sketchbook should not be a shrine filled with my best work, but a tool to help me practice, and explore new ideas freely.  Continuing on, I blow my thumbnail up to whatever size i like. (in this case 11 x 17) and sometimes i play around with color, but thinking about it now, I generally just go straight to inking.

2. Step TWO! TO THE LIGHT TABLE!!! So i take my print-out, on extra ordinary paper, down to the hovel where i work in the basement (not my ideal studio, but i'm working with what I've got..)  From here I use I light table to sketch out the details with my ever trusty purple pencil (sorry I don't have an image for this one).

3. Inking! Generally I use Microns, sizes 01, .005, for those extra fine details.  But I have also been known to use a brush/pen, in certain cases.  For some illo's, I use multiple sheets of paper + light table to create layers of inking if there is a lot going on. This makes it easier to color the lines in Photoshop later. And finally, scan, often in multiple scans. I dream of a giant flatbed, but alas I do not have one.

4.  PHOTOSHOP is where most of the magic happens.  I don't have separate images for every layer (I'll do a detailed post about Photoshop process in the future), but I have a lovely little GIF that provides a visual.  The process normally goes, color in flat background colors, add texture, add shading/highlights, color lines, add more textures, and then play around until everything feels right.

Swan Lake

Created some personal work to add to my portfolio recently.  I think I got everything on my checklist of thinks I love: birds, detail, texture. Check! Anyway I had lots of fun with this, and I was vaguely thinking of potential possibilities for theater/opera houses/book covers/posters etc.

Process Post to come with details and perhaps, even with a GIF.

SILA West 52 Gold award - student category

This past weekend I learned that both of my entries were accepted for the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles competition in the student category.  And crazy enough, they thought my piece, Drifting Memories, was deserving of a Gold Award, and I can barely contain myself!  After a short solo dance party, and then a night out with a few amazingly supportive friends, I do want to thank everyone who has followed, and supported my work so far!  You guys are amazing, you know who you are.

A site will be put up to feature all of those who were accepted, but in the mean time, winners in all categories can be found here: http://si-la.org/news/sila/illustration-west-52-judged/

My two accepted pieces, Drifting Memories (Gold Award) and Imagine:

For a couple years now I've had an Etsy Shop, but never really used it.  Recently I've had some free time, and I've decided to properly photograph and document some of my work.  So have a look, buy something or favourite something! I'd love you for it!
